I got this because “It was like The Lover“, and I liked that book, so “I would like this one, too.”

I can’t say I really… liked it. I can’t say it was just ok either; it’s somewhere in between, and to be fair, I never went past half the book.
The part I read wasn’t all that bad, but it felt a bit like the author kept trying to sound more than what she could actually be. Like a kid trying to use big words.
I got bored halfway through and decided I better take my time reading about samurai.

It’s a kind of book I’d probably pick up again sometime, but not anytime soon.

I was really, really eager to read this book, and in the end I was very, very disappointed with it. A real shame because I wanted to like it so bad.

I loved the writing style and the story idea, but I didn’t like the way it jumped back and forth in time during the first parts of the book. It was… not entirely confusing, but certainly annoying. Pick one, tell it.
It ended up being really more a family saga than about Cal, which was kind of sad since I really wanted to know more about Cal but didn’t get to learn much after all. At all. That’s not to say the (for instance) grandparents’ section wasn’t interesting, but it wasn’t them that made me want to read the book to begin with, and it wasn’t that exciting either.

So, basically, one big disappointment.
